The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB)
UTMB was established in 1891 as the first academic health center in Texas and is a component of the University of Texas System. Today UTMB includes five schools (medicine, nursing, health professions, public and population health, and graduate biomedical sciences), a network of hospitals and clinics that provide a full range of primary and specialized medical care, and numerous research facilities.
UTMB is a large University based hospital with over 13,000 admits to the newborn nursery and over 600 admits to the NICU each year as well as referrals from across the Gulf Coast of Texas. UTMB is one of only three Level 1 trauma centers in the greater Houston area as well as one of only four ECMO centers in the greater Houston area. In the last few years, UTMB has expanded from 1 hospital in Galveston to 3 additional hospitals in Clear Lake, League City, and Angleton. All pediatric medical specialties and surgical specialties including urology, ENT, orthopedics, and neurosurgery are available.
The Department of Surgery at UTMB is seeking candidates with outstanding clinical skills, a collaborative spirit, compassion and the desire to provide high quality care. The person in this position is responsible for providing direct patient care, including surgery, consultative services, outpatient services, and care of hospitalized patients. He/she will participate in teaching activities of the Department including conferences and lectures, bedside teaching, and rounds; teaching of students and residents in the operating room, clinics, and in-patient services; continuing medical education; and local, regional, and national meetings. In addition, the person in this position will have administrative responsibilities including supervising and evaluating residents and students and participating in committee memberships at the Departmental and Health System levels.
Minimal Education and Experience:
- M.D. or D.O degree from an accredited medical institution.
- Accredited residency training in General Surgery.
- Completed a Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship
- Current unrestricted license to practice medicine by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners.
- Board certification or Board eligibility by the ABS and the ABCRS.
